Zero-party data
Zero-party data is information that consumers intentionally and proactively share with a brand — through surveys, polls, preference centers, or research participation. Unlike first-party data (derived from behavior) or third-party data (purchased from external sources), zero-party data is explicitly given, making it the most accurate and consent-compliant form of consumer insight available.
Why it matters
Zero-party data is not inferred or observed — it is declared. When a consumer tells you they are in the market for a new car, that they prefer sustainable packaging, or that they switched from a competitor because of price, that is zero-party data. It requires no inference and carries no compliance risk when collected with proper consent.
The data hierarchy
-
🙋Zero-party dataDeclared directly by the consumer through surveys, polls, preference centers, or research activities. Highest accuracy; fully consent-compliant.
-
🏠First-party dataDerived from consumer behavior within your own systems — purchase history, website activity, app usage. High accuracy; behavioral rather than declared.
-
🤝Second-party dataA trusted partner's first-party data, shared through a data agreement. Moderate accuracy; no direct consent relationship with your brand.
-
📦Third-party dataPurchased from external data brokers. Aggregated and inferred. Lower accuracy; restricted by privacy regulations.
Use cases
-
Personalization — using declared preferences to power relevant product recommendations without relying on behavioral inference
-
Product roadmap decisions — understanding directly from consumers which features they want
-
Consent-compliant data collection — building rich consumer profiles through voluntary research participation
-
Audience segmentation — segmenting based on self-declared attitudes and needs rather than probabilistic behavioral clusters
A retail brand is rebuilding its email personalization strategy as third-party cookies become unavailable. Rather than purchasing behavioral data, they launch a preference survey to their owned research audience of 4,000 customers — gathering declared preferences on product categories, content interests, and purchase timing. The result is a first-party segmentation model built entirely on zero-party data.
