Qualitative research

Definition

Qualitative research is a research methodology focused on understanding the why behind consumer attitudes and behaviors. Through methods like in-depth video interviews, focus groups, discussion boards, and diary studies, it generates rich, contextual insight — exploring motivations, emotions, and experiences that quantitative data alone cannot reveal.

Why it matters

Where quantitative research tells you what consumers think at scale, qualitative research tells you why — and often surfaces things a survey question would never uncover. It is inherently exploratory, designed for questions that require human context, not just numbers.

Common qualitative research methods

  • 🎙️
    In-depth interviews (IDIs)
One-on-one conversations between a moderator and a participant, conducted live via video or asynchronously. Best for sensitive topics, complex purchasing journeys, or executive audiences.
  • 👥
    Focus groups
Moderated group discussions, typically 6–10 participants, exploring shared and divergent perspectives on a topic in real time.
  • 💬
    Online discussion boards
Asynchronous text, image, or video-based activities where participants respond to prompts over several days — enabling reflection and richer responses than live sessions.
  • 📓
    Diary studies
Longitudinal activities where participants document their experiences, behaviors, or feelings over time, capturing real-world context that lab-based research misses.

Use cases

  • Concept and prototype testing — understanding how consumers react to a new product or feature before quantitative validation
  • Message and creative development — hearing the actual words consumers use and identifying which framings resonate emotionally
  • Journey mapping — tracing the full purchase or usage experience through the consumer's own narrative
  • Problem diagnosis — when quantitative data flags an issue, qual research explains what's driving it
Example

An e-commerce brand's survey data shows a drop in checkout completion rates, but the numbers don't explain why. The insights team runs 12 in-depth interviews with recent cart abandoners — and discovers a specific shipping cost disclosure moment triggering abandonment. That finding directly informs a UX fix that the quant data alone would never have surfaced.
